Ashoke Weerakoon is a distinguished research scientist with an illustrious career spanning over 15 years in the field of scientific research. Qualifying as a scientist, he was appointed by the government of Sri Lanka and has since worked across a wide range of fields, including oceanography and marine sciences, fisheries, environmental sciences, and socioeconomics. Throughout his professional journey, Ashoke has held pivotal roles in both governmental and non-governmental research and policy institutions within Sri Lanka.
With a commitment to global cooperation and sustainable development, Ashoke has been an active volunteer for the United Nations (UN) since 2008. His extensive international experience comprises involvement in a multitude of projects, fostering collaborations with institutions and programs worldwide including the Institute of Marine Research (IMR), Norway; the EAF-Nansen Program of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO); the Second Institute of Oceanography (SIO), China; the University of Western Australia; and the Centre for Environment, Fisheries and Aquaculture Science (Cefas), UK. His collaborative endeavors have been instrumental in advancing research initiatives, particularly those affiliated with the Scientific Service at the National Institute of Oceanography and Marine Sciences (NIOMS) and the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), Sri Lanka.
Ashoke holds an International Master of Business Administration (MBA) degree (Australia), a Master's Degree in Environmental Sciences (Australia), including a Master of Environment Management degree (Sri Lanka), and a Special Honor’s B.Sc. degree in Agricultural Sciences (Sri Lanka). He is a Certified Chartered Management Accountant (CMA) from the Institutes of Certified Management Accountants (Australia and Sri Lanka), and a Certified Chartered Accountant (CA) from the Institute of Chartered Accountants (Sri Lanka). Additionally, he is a Sun Certified Java Programmer (SCJP) from Sun Microsystems (USA), a Microsoft Certified Programmer (MCP) from Microsoft (USA), and a Member of the Association of MBAs (UK).
Ashoke has garnered several prestigious awards for his outstanding research achievements, particularly for his performance in designing research, developing analytical techniques, and project outcomes. Furthermore, His expertise has been acknowledged through the acquisition of numerous research grants, enabling him to pursue innovative projects and make impactful contributions to both science and society. Ashoke's research findings have been disseminated through a wide number of publications in international journals, showcasing his dedication to advancing scientific knowledge and sharing insights with the global research community.
In his current endeavours, Ashoke is deeply involved in exploring the intersections of Environment, Sustainability, and Global Development. Engaged in collaborative research with international organizations, he contributes to advancing scientific knowledge and nurturing sustainable global progress based in Sweden.
